Makenzie owns an art gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, where she features the works of several local artists, focusing on large contemporary pieces in an impressionistic style featuring the textures and patinas of the historical buildings near the waterfront. She has always loved the way the afternoon sun hits the centuries-old details, bringing out the rich layers and character of the weathered exteriors.
Her eye for unexpected details, contrasts and textures is precisely what her clientele loves about her gallery. But it’s all so personal, she realizes. What one person loves, another person hardly notices. That’s the beauty of art; it speaks in many languages and reaches each person on a different level.
“It’s so important to let art speak to your own aesthetic and let it connect to your soul,” Makenzie says. “It’s just a metaphor for surrounding yourself with what you love.”
