Miranda's Story:
The boardwalk, warmed by the sun, and worn by decades of bicycle tires, fringed surreys and millions of feet, is unusually empty this morning. Miranda steps outside onto the porch of the rented beach house wrapped in her kimono, coffee in hand. Placing a clean beach towel on the dewy Adirondack chair, she sits down to watch the sunrise over the surprisingly calm ocean. Seagulls are ready for breakfast, and she can already smell the donuts and sticky buns from the bakery not far down the boardwalk.
It’s going to be a great day. A few hours at the beach, and an evening boardwalk stroll. This is the life, she thinks, as she picks up her beach read novel. Why is it that she only allows herself to read these total escapist novels when she’s on vacation? It’s a total luxury she rarely allows herself to enjoy while at home. She vows to change that when she gets back home. Rearrange her priorities. In the meantime, she pulls her kimono around her and settles in for a chapter or two while the coffee is hot.
